12-Step Recovery Program in Massachusetts: A Path to Lasting Recovery at NorthStar Recovery Center

At NorthStar Recovery Center, we offer individualized care that includes traditional therapies, holistic options, and a 12-Step recovery program. The 12-Step recovery program is 12 individualized steps that you take over and over again on your path to recovery. Recovering using the 12-Step program means accepting that you do not have control over everything and that a higher power exists. This does not mean that you have to believe in God, only that you surrender to a version of a higher power.

The 12-Step recovery method includes significant structure and support, and the primary method is peer support. As an individual looking to recover, you attend 12-Step meetings where you hear about other’s experiences and struggles with addiction and recovery. Additionally, you get to share your own, be heard, and find community.

The steps according to the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Big Book include:

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Tailoring 12-Step to Individual Needs

When you initially read through each step, you may find that some are more likely to fit into your life and your experience. However, over time, you will learn to adapt and tailor each step to fit your unique situation and needs. It is likely that in different situations, you will take steps over again. For example, you will likely take a personal inventory of when you were wrong many times and seek forgiveness as you move further into recovery.

While this process can be daunting, the 12-Step program provides you with structure and support that reaches beyond treatment. After treatment, you can stay involved in a 12-Step program, continuing to learn how to tailor the steps to your needs and meet new challenges that arise.

Key Benefits of a 12-Step Program for Substance Abuse Recovery

When you are seeking recovery from substance abuse, it can feel like a lonely road. Addiction, in general, commonly feels lonely and isolating. However, you are not alone. Many individuals like yourself struggle with substance abuse and have learned to live in recovery. The 12-Step program can offer a ket support network, a place to address your mental health and addiction, and an emphasis on growth that can help.

Building a Support Network

Peer support is when you receive and provide support from peers. In addiction recovery, this means support from others who have struggled with substance abuse as well. While your loved ones can provide some support, peer support is a network of people who understand the challenges that you have lived with. Building this support network is vital and one of the reasons why peer support is so effective in addiction recovery

Through 12-Step meetings, you have an opportunity to listen to others and share your own story. It is a structured meeting, which allows each person attending to be heard. You are likely to hear from individuals close to the start of the recovery journey and those far into it. It is common to learn new things from peers, such as ideas of how to solve problems and more. Ultimately, a support network provides emotional support; it also gives you a place where you are understood and seen.

Addressing Mental Health and Addiction Together

In 12-Step recovery, mental health and addiction are not separated. Many individuals struggling with addiction have a co-occurring mental health disorder. However, peer support is effective for recovery from both mental health challenges and addiction. Therefore, 12-Step recovery can benefit you if you have a co-occurring disorder.

In 12-Step recovery, you get to hear other individuals’ challenges. These challenges can help you to understand not only your issue with substance abuse but also your mental health. You can learn how they interact in other people’s lives and how you can recover and rebuild your life.

Emphasis on Spiritual and Personal Growth

While we know that not all of our clients are spiritual, personal growth is an important part of recovery. The 12-Step recovery program offers structured support and encouragement for personal growth. You are surrounded by others who are also seeking to grow and change and, as a result, are encouraged and supported to shift your life in a more positive direction.

How NorthStar Recovery Center Integrates 12-Step

The lessons of the 12-Step program are integrated into treatment at NorthStar Recovery Center. 12-Step teaches us the importance of admitting when you are in need of help, offering support, and making amends. However, at NorthStar Recovery Center, our values are also found in the 12-Step recovery program; as such, you will find professional guidance, compassionate care, family involvement, and long-term recovery plans all working in conjunction with 12-Step recovery.

Professional Guidance and Compassionate Care

At NorthStar Recovery Center, we know that the people who make up the treatment center make all the difference. Therefore, our staff is knowledgeable, capable of providing guidance, and compassionate. We know how hard recovery is and aim to help you heal through compassion and care. These values play a role in 12-Step recovery, as our staff are directly involved in leading peer support groups to ensure that all involved get the most out of the meeting.

The Importance of Family Involvement in Addiction Recovery

Family involvement at NorthStar Recovery is based on your needs. We know that every client has unique needs in terms of their recovery and that family will fit in differently for each. Therefore, we seek to find methods that family involvement will aid your recovery, not derail it. While 12-Step programs are not available to families, they can learn about the process and how it aids you, supporting you both in treatment and after seeking out peer support in a healthy and helpful manner.

Building Long-Term Recovery Plans

At NorthStar Recovery Center, we know that treatment is only the first step. However, looking into the future can be daunting. Therefore, we build long-term recovery plans as part of treatment. We help you to build plans and options for yourself that will offer you support both in treatment and after. One of these options is 12-Step recovery. 12-Step groups are available both in treatment and after and can be a perfect opportunity for you to familiarize yourself with peer support that can continue to be helpful long into recovery.

Comprehensive Therapy Options Alongside 12-Step

At NorthStar Recovery Center, we know that 12-Step recovery does not offer everything you need in treatment. Therefore, we offer 12-Step recovery alongside comprehensive therapy options.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Informed Care

Behavioral therapy – both cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) – helps you to understand your thoughts, actions, and feelings and how they connect. By tapping into a heightened level of awareness, you are able to see patterns that affect your challenges with mental health and substance abuse.

Group Therapy and Spiritual Development Groups

While many therapies in treatment are individual therapy, group therapy and spiritual development groups allow you to work with a counselor and your peers. These interactions have many benefits, giving you an opportunity to learn about your peers, improve communication skills, and share your story. At NorthStar Recovery Center, we offer these services as a way of rounding out our comprehensive care.

Finding 12-Step Recovery Support Across Massachusetts

One of the beautiful things about 12-Step recovery is that you can find support through 12-Step recovery groups across Massachusetts. At NorthStar Recovery Center, our 12-Step groups are only the tip of the iceberg. Wherever ever you live and wherever you travel, 12-Step gives you support and care when you are in need.

What to Expect from Your First 12-Step Meeting

Attending your first 12-Step meeting can be daunting. However, 12-Step meetings are welcoming and structured similarly wherever you go. At 12-Step meetings, there is a moderator who helps to lead the group. However, this person is not a counselor. As a new group member, you can participate as much or as little as you like. You are welcome to share with the group and listen to others. It is a safe space for you to be completely yourself and accepted wherever you are in the recovery process.

Getting treatment at Northstar was one of the best decisions of my life. Everyone there truly cares about each and every client, from the counselors to the administrators, to the owners, every day that I went in, I felt loved. I was hesitant at first but recovery isn’t what it used to be, I found such joy and peace and kindness and compassion at Northstar. There is no judgement behind their doors. The staff all chose to work in recovery because it has touched their lives in some way and they know how much good treatment is needed. I’ll take the lessons I learned and the friendships I made at Northstar everywhere I go. If you need treatment, do not hesitate to reach out to them.

My experience at North Star topped the other 12 times I had been in treatment. This time it has lasted. Their knowledge of both addiction and mental health truly helps each individual understand their disease- and feel understood and not alone. They will go above and beyond for you- especially Rebecca. I am almost in tears with gratitude and cannot begin to express the life changing experience I had at North Star. Shout out or Ben for getting me and Rebecca and Alesha for supporting me when I couldn’t support myself.

Northstar recovery and the community around it absolutely saved my life. Not only are the staff members an absolute life saver but just being connected to so many other people that are here for recovery and really want it has helped so much. I’ve been to other iop’s where it feels like the staff is just there for a pay check but not at Northstar. Every employee here are always willing to reach out a hand and help you out at any point, and enjoy doing it! Huge shout out to Ben and Chris! They started a big book study group within Northstar that i take full advantage of and has helped with my sobriety significantly. Will be getting five months this Friday and without the help of Northstar i don’t think i would have been able to do it!

At first I was nervous as this was my first time reaching out for help, I got the courage and placed the call on the other end was a gentleman by the name of Jeff, he set my mind at ease during this tough time and was very informative and supportive, as well as keeping my family in the loop. All the staff were just the same and my overall experience was second to none. Only regret is I didn’t reach out sooner.
