Our Founding Story

Northstar Recovery Center was born from empathy. From the founders on down, all of our team members have been directly or indirectly affected by substance use or mental health challenges. That lived experience shaped how we saw the landscape of addiction treatment, and what was missing from it.

At the time, people facing substance misuse were presented with two very different paths. If they had excellent, often costly insurance, they could access high-end treatment centers. If they didn’t, their choices were limited to underfunded, state-run facilities. The gap between the two felt not just unfair, but deeply unjust.

We set out to change that. Our vision was simple: to bring the highest quality care and a beautiful environment to everyone in our community who wanted help, regardless of their financial or insurance status.

One of the toughest parts came early. Finding a space to build that vision was harder than we imagined. Time and again, we were told by landlords and brokers, “We appreciate what you’re doing, but not in our building.” It was a reminder of the stigma we were up against – not just for those in recovery, but for the very idea of helping them.

Nevertheless, we kept going and built a team of extraordinary people – compassionate, dedicated, and driven not by profit, but by purpose. Today, that team goes above and beyond every single day. They show up not just for the job, but for the people we serve.

Northstar isn’t just a facility, it’s a place where people begin to rebuild their lives. We’re proud of the hundreds of success stories that started here and even more proud of the community that made them possible.
