Northstar Recovery Center was pivotal for my family as my loved one began his sobriety journey. The program is filled with empathy, compassion, and professionalism as they guide the patients through recovery. Now, 2.5 years later, the person I love most is sober and Northstar is our extended family. I can’t adequately express my gratitude to them for what they’ve given us.
Response from the owner:It truly means the world to us to hear how Northstar Recovery Center has impacted your family’s journey. We are honored to have been a part of your loved one’s path to sobriety and to have provided the support and care he needed along the way. Stories like yours are the reason we do what we do, and we are beyond grateful to be considered part of your extended family. Congratulations to your loved one on 2.5 years of sobriety—that is an incredible achievement! Wishing you and your family continued strength, healing, and happiness.
I’d like to start this review by saying that the clinical staff of Northstar are very kind, caring, and capable. The facility itself is impressive.

With that being said, I don’t want to dissuade you from going here. I just felt like I needed to leave an honest review about a very traumatic incident that happened to me that was directly related to the choices of the administrative staff.

I decided to stop going to treatment. Simple as that. When I wrote in (because I like this official kind of stuff to be in writing) I was very to the point about my intentions of discharging and was very careful not to divulge any information that gave away my emotional state at the moment or up to the moment that lead me to my decision. At that moment, in my mind, that was it.

As I knew would happen, a member of administration contacted me, first twice by phone (after making it clear that I’d like all further correspondence to be through email), then by email asking me to check in. She sounded caring, and being the trusting idiot that I am, I decided to open up about my choice.

I won’t get into all the details here, but a huge part of me not opening up at first was my fear of being sectioned and taken against my will again. Unless this has happened to you before, completely without warning or time to make arrangements for your life, you will not understand how traumatic this can be.

So within one or two sentences out of a couple paragraphs I did admit to how I was feeling at the moment of my decision. I didn’t say I was going to do anything or that I was still in that state. The rest of the email was me thanking them for being such wonderful people, but I was still discharging myself.

After that I took a nap. I am someone who never expects guests, especially those of the uninvited variety. I was woken suddenly by banging at my door accompanied by very assertive voices telling me to open the door. I did as I was told, because despite my appearance, I do everything I can to comply with the law because of the possible consequences.

It ended up being four emergency personal, a couple being armed cops. I appreciate the idea of cops. One of my best friends is one, but I am still very cautious around them. I was able to diffuse the situation and convince them I was okay and wasn’t going to do anything crazy. They were nice about it and left.

When I closed the door, I was flabbergasted. I was so frustrated that I chose to be honest against my better judgment and once again, I was betrayed by someone who was supposed to be helping me. Luckily, this time, I was able to talk my way out of it, but it brought back memories of the first time as if they’d just happened.

Like I’ve said before, I don’t want to dissuade you from seeking treatment from Northstar. Those tasked with treatment really do care, but remember this. This, like most other treatment facilities are for-profit businesses. They’re not all angels. Upon examining my patient portal, I discovered that the last time I was there, about three days through Zoom meetings, I was listed as being there for 23 days. Which I’m sure was a much bigger bill to the insurance company. I honestly don’t care about that part since I don’t pay for it other than my over $600/mo premium. I just thought it was interesting.

Anyhow. Now I’m just rambling. I just needed to get that off my chest or it would have festered from frustration into anger and into hate. This is just my story. I’m certain it won’t be yours. There’s a good reason why mine is the only bad review. Forgive me for my candor.
