International Overdose Awareness Day, observed each year on August 31, is a time to remember the people we have lost to overdose, support the families and communities who carry that loss, and share information that can help prevent another one.
This year’s theme is “25 Years On. Still Needed.” Massachusetts has made significant progress in reducing opioid-related overdose deaths, but the crisis is far from over. Nearly 1,000 people in our state are still dying each year, and an unpredictable drug supply means that every overdose should be taken seriously.
Knowledge can save a life. Knowing how to recognize an overdose, keeping naloxone available, understanding what to do in an emergency, and knowing where to turn when someone is ready for help can make a real difference.
