Let’s discuss ways to celebrate recovery, how treatment can help, and answer frequently asked questions, including why celebrating recovery is important.
How to Celebrate Recovery
Wondering how to celebrate recovery? Here are some ideas.
- Treat yourself. Treat yourself to something that makes you happy, whether that’s an at-home spa day, an activity you enjoy, a nice meal, a vacation, or getting yourself a small gift.
- Reflect. Whether on your own or with someone else, like a therapist or support group members, self-reflection gives you the chance to celebrate how far you’ve come.
- Host a sober party. Having fun in sobriety is crucial. You might host a classic dinner party, or structure the event around fun, substance-free activities, such as movies, bowling, escape rooms, arcades, a picnic, or anything else you enjoy.
- Share your story. Sharing your story gives you the chance to celebrate your own recovery and help others. Whether you write about it or share it in support group meetings, this can be a powerful act.
- Sobriety coins. In 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), sobriety coins (tokens) are used to commemorate recovery milestones, such as 30 days sober.
Everyone’s different. Choose an option that works for you; no matter how big or small it is, celebrating how far you’ve come matters.
Our Programs
Northstar Recovery Center will help you celebrate your progress every step of the way. Our programs provide highly flexible and effective addiction treatment.
Addiction Day Treatment Programs In Massachusetts
The addiction day treatment programs in Massachusetts at Northstar Recovery operate six days per week. Clients come to treatment at their preferred location from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM on weekdays and from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturdays. Groups, individual therapy sessions, recreational activities, and other treatments, such as family therapy and yoga, are combined for a whole-person approach to care.
IOP In Massachusetts
Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) in Massachusetts is the next step down from day treatment. Clients participate in fewer therapy hours per week, but the same effective approach is used. You can choose from the following three IOP schedules:
- Mornings (9:00 AM to noon).
- Afternoons (12:30 PM to 3:30 PM).
- Evenings (5:30 PM to 8:30 PM in West Springfield or 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in Southborough).
Since people in IOP often balance daily life responsibilities like work or school with therapy, the reduced time commitment and flexibility IOPs provide can be critical. People may start with this care level or transition into IOP after completing day treatment, depending on their needs.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment In Massachusetts
Dual-diagnosis care addresses addiction and co-occurring mental health concerns simultaneously. This can be central in helping people establish comprehensive healing and quality of life in addiction recovery. We offer dual-diagnosis treatment in Massachusetts at all levels of care.
Virtual Addiction Treatment In Massachusetts
In addition to our in-person recovery programs, Northstar Recovery is proud to offer virtual addiction treatment in Massachusetts. Treatment options include a fully virtual partial hospitalization program (PHP), fully virtual IOP, and hybrid scheduling.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why is it important to celebrate recovery?
Celebrating recovery can be important for more than one reason. Benefits of celebrating recovery from addiction can include, but aren’t limited to, the following.
- Motivation. Celebrating recovery can provide positive reinforcement, helping you stay motivated and committed to sobriety.
- Confidence and self-esteem. Taking stock of your achievements can help you recognize your capabilities, fostering a sense of pride and confidence to overcome future obstacles.
- Opportunities for social connection. Celebrating with others can remind you that you are not alone and gives you a chance to connect with your support system.
Celebrations don’t need to be extravagant if you don’t want them to be. Regardless of how you celebrate recovery, it’s vital to take time to acknowledge your progress. Doing so fosters a positive mindset by encouraging you to take time to recognize your own strengths.
How do I celebrate someone’s recovery?
There are a lot of ways to celebrate someone’s recovery. Depending on the person, here are some ideas.
- Give a meaningful gift. Journals, memory boxes, self-care packages, flowers, or scrapbooks are some examples of meaningful gifts for a person in recovery.
- Write them a letter. Heartfelt cards, letters, and notes are a great way to express your support and admiration for a person and their recovery journey.
- Join them at a support group meeting. Since many people celebrate recovery milestones in support group meetings like AA or NA, offering to join them is a way to show your support if they are open to it.
- Extend an act of service. Especially if they have a lot going on, offering to babysit, cook, or help with a task at home can take stress off of your loved one’s shoulders and give them the time they need for self-care.
- Words of affirmation. Tell the person that you are proud of them.
No two people are quite alike. Asking someone what would mean the most to them is a great way to help them celebrate their recovery if you’re not sure.
What are the 12 promises in AA?
The 12 promises of AA describe the positive changes members experience from working the steps, such as changes in attitude and outlook. These are referenced in Chapter Six of the Big Book.
